Millennial Fair – Valkyrie Profile Soundtrack Page
Before Valkyrie Profile, Motoi Sakuraba stunned the gaming world with both the original and arranged
soundtracks for Star Ocean II: The Second Story, for which he used nothing but real instruments. Prior
to his work for Enix, Sakuraba had already composed the music for SEGA (Camelot), and their highly
popular Shinging Force series. Sakuraba developed his own, distinctive style of music that is easy
to regocnize when placed next to other composers’ works. The Valkyrie Profile Original Soundtrack
is a work of art that many people will be able to enjoy. To read more about it, just scroll down to

Review by
The Valkyrie Profile Soundtrack has to be one of the best I have ever heard. Motoi Sakuraba really
deserves a lot of praise for his hard work on this CD. Disc one is probably the best of the two discs,
because it has the most varied tracks. The CD starts off with a dramatic yet soothing
composition called Epic Poem to Sacred Death; a track that would return in the game many times. The next
impressive track is Valhalla, obviously named after the home of the Gods. A beautiful score of many
different intruments, accompanied by a male choir. The sound reminds me a lot of the Shining Force III
sountrack, because of its the trademark flute sounds. All is Twilight is probably one of the most
emotional tracks in the game, and accompanied with the storyline, this track can make you instantly
sad. One of the better tracks, but perhaps not too appealing without insight of the game’s story.
Prosperity’s Compensation, however, is a very powerful, short track which will definately impress
the listener as it invites a lot more intrigue. In water, air and light is one of my favorite tracks,
as it combined traditional japanese sound with an uncanny athmosphere of hapiness. Another one of
those tracks is Soon we See Shadow and Light, which has heavy japanese influences but also a very dominant
and mysterious undertone. The first battle theme, Battle with God Syndrome annoys me somewhat, because
as it progresses, it loses its uniqueness and starts to get a bit annoying. Overal its a good track, but
not too impressive. The next few tracks are all in game tracks of normal occurances, such as
Confidence in Domination, the main battle theme. Not to complain, but they quality of the battle themes
always seems to be lacking in Sakuraba’s work. Follow by this is a collection of dungeon themes,
which are, in my opinion, alright tracks. Hopeless Resolution is a solid track, however, the fact that
it is over four minutes long puts me off because it starts to get repetative. The last few tracks of
disc one are alright, but nothing to be really pleased with.
Disc two continues with more dungeon themes, of which Rise Above the World is one of the better tracks
because it is a lot different from the rest. Unstable Balance and Recurrent shudders are a bit less
cheery than the other tracks and a little more serious, which makes them more appropriate for the
final dungeons. Next is a whole score of tracks from the adventures of the Einherjar. Most of which
are okay, and especially Lilly of the Valley stands out. This tracks reminds me of one of the town themes
on the Shining Force III OST. The Crumbling Id is one of the coolest short tracks on the game, and you
will hear it quite a lot. The Neverending Cycle of Reincarnation is a decent, soothing track which
really draws out the real potential of Sakuraba’'s compositions, which is emotional and
orchestral music. Like becoming Accustomed to Hapiness is my favorite track of all, as it combines all
the good traits in the other songs, and merges them into one impressive ending track. The last part of the
CD is filled with songs from the Star Ocean II Original Soundtrack. They are good tracks, but I would
have personally chosen something else. Oh well, I guess Sakuraba needed to advertise his older work somehow,
which I think is a shame, because the Valkyrie Profile OST is a good album on its own, and so is the Star
Ocean II OST.
